Natural Diamonds
Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth over billions of years under intense heat and pressure. Each diamond is a naturally occurring crystal with its own combination of characteristics, making every stone unique.
Natural diamonds remain a traditional choice for engagement rings and fine jewellery and are valued for their geological origin, rarity and long history in jewellery.
How Natural Diamonds Are Formed
Natural diamonds form deep within the Earth, where intense heat and pressure slowly transform carbon into diamond crystals. This process takes place over very long geological periods — typically billions of years. Over time, these diamonds are carried closer to the surface through natural geological processes, where they can eventually be found and mined.
What Makes Each Diamond Unique
Every diamond is assessed against four key characteristics, known as the 4Cs. Together, they influence how a diamond looks and its price — no single characteristic is automatically more important than the others; the right balance comes down to personal preference and budget.
How well a diamond's facets are shaped and proportioned, which determines how it interacts with light and sparkles.
The presence, or absence, of natural colour in a diamond, graded on a scale from colourless to noticeably tinted.
The presence of natural internal or surface characteristics, and how visible they are to the eye.
The weight, and broadly the size, of a diamond, measured in carats.
Diamond Certification
GIA is one of the world’s most recognised and respected diamond grading laboratories, but it is not the only organisation that certifies diamonds. Other established laboratories, including IGI and others, also grade diamonds using recognised standards for characteristics such as cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
The important thing is that the diamond comes with a grading report from a reputable laboratory, and that the specifications on that report match the stone being purchased.
